Jewellery Care

Caring for your jewels

Always take care when wearing jewellery as unexpected knocks can cause damage to precious metals and stones. Diamonds are the hardest and most durable gemstones but they are not impervious to damage. If handled carelessly, diamonds can scratch one another as well as damage other stones. Diamonds, along with all other gemstones, can break or chip if exposed to sudden impact so its good practice to remove jewellery before playing sport, going to the gym, gardening or doing any other physical activity.

Cleaning your jewels

Ainsley Fine Jewellery recommends you to have stone-set jewellery cleaned and checked every 12 months to ensure the stones are secure and look as fresh as they did on the day you purchased them. If you are in Leura, the team at Ainsley are happy to do a clean for you.

You can clean your jewellery yourself using a soft, worn-out toothbrush and some warm, soapy water. Avoid using harsh chemicals or cleaning materials such as scourers which can leave noticeable scratches on the surface of precious metals and softer gemstones.

Chlorine can dissolve gold, so gold jewellery should never be worn while using bleach-based cleaners or while swimming in a chlorinated pool. Needless to say, such cleaners should never be used to clean any jewellery.

Gemstones such as emeralds and opals are very sensitive and require extra care as the wrong treatment can cause irreversible damage. When cleaning stone-set jewellery, always take the necessary precautions to protect the most sensitive stone in the piece.

Sterling Silver will tarnish naturally over time. Using a silver polishing cloth will help keep your silver bright. For sterling silver pieces that have been intentionally oxidised (blackened), it is best to avoid cleaning with any chemical (including a silver polishing cloths) as these will remove the surface treatmen
